Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is a student at a University in Texas. As the city has been attacked by zombies, he fears for his family and decides to go back to Ohio to reunite with his parents.
He isn’t afraid of zombies, but actually has a clown phobia.
On its way home, Columbus meets Tallahassee. He is also on a journey to Florida where he goes with the intention to kill all the zombies he finds. Tallahassee offers to drive Columbus up to Texarkana. The student accepts and they leave.
They make a stop at a grocery store to buy some food and twinkies for Tallahassee. There, the two men find Wichita and Little Rock, two sisters which have survived zombie attacks and travel together. Little Rock pretends to have been bitten by a zombie. Columbus gives his gun to Wichita so she can kill the girl before she is turned. The two sisters rob them and drive off in Tallahassee’s car.
Tallahassee is determined to get his ride back. He and Columbus manage to trace the girls. After they reconcile, they continue the journey together.
The group arrives in Hollywood and use a map of famous residences to find Bill Murray’s home. Columbus is surprised to find out that Little Rock hasn’t heard about the famous actor. He takes her to see one of its films: Ghostbusters. They also find the actor walking freely in a zombie disguise. The group decides to trick Columbus into thinking that Bill Murray is an actual zombie. He falls for it and shoots the actor killing him.
Later on, the girls and the two men gather for a game of Monopoly. Tallahassee tells them about his son being killed by a zombie and they feel that they’ve become a family. Wichita and Little Rock leave the group and head out to the amusement park which is free of zombies. This turns out to be just a rumor. They are rescued by Columbus and Tallahassee and they continue their journey together.
